When it’s not wax!

“I feel like my ears are under water”

“I feel pressure in my ear when I lay down at night”

“I can hear crackling noises when I chew or yawn”

These are all indications that an accumulation of wax may not be the problem! Our Aural Care Practitioner Nikki Benson talks about Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.

Nikki explains: “Eustachian Tube Dysfunction is when the tube between the sinus and the middle ear is not opening easily, as it should, and the middle ear air pressure is unable to equalise. It often occurs after a cold or hay-fever and, if persistent, may also result in fluid accumulating in the middle ear. This is called a middle ear effusion. So, if you’ve experienced persistent muffled hearing, crackling, popping, pressure or dizziness, following a cold or hay fever, you may want to try a protocol to open up your Eustachian Tubes.

Open up those ears!

The best way to open your Eustachian Tubes is to commence a regime of nasal spray and ‘ear equalising’. To be carried out three times per day.

Decongestant nasal sprays are best. Alternatively, if you know you have hay-fever as many do during Spring time, use an Anti-histamine nasal spray. Both are available over the counter at your local pharmacy. After applying spray in each nostril, wait 10 minutes for the nasal spray to take effect. Equalise your ear pressure by closing your mouth, pinching your nose and expelling air as if you were blowing up a balloon. You should feel your ears pop! If not, persist with the regime, it may take time before your Eustachian tube begins to open easily. For maximum effectiveness of ear equalising, try the ‘Otovent’ device available online. This regime commonly takes 2-4 weeks, 3 x day for symptoms to fully resolve. Sometimes longer.

Please call 0345 2220579 to arrange an appointment but do remember that painful ears are a sign that a middle ear effusion has become a middle ear infection and you will need to visit your GP for oral antibiotics”.
